Argentina, its water and our people

National Water Plan

Freshwater is only 2.5% of the total water on our planet.

Of this already small percentage 69% is ice at the poles and snow in the mountains and 30 % is groundwater.

That is, only 1% of that 2.5% is available in rivers and lakes.

Shocking, isn't it?

Did you know that of that tiny amount available, Argentina salinises, that is: it sends the equivalent of 250 litres per inhabitant of the planet into the sea and allows that scarce sweet wonder to become salty?

Yes. 250 litres for 8 billion.

2,000,000,000,000,000,000 litres per day of fresh water dumped into the sea.

The whole of Argentina could be irrigated, yet many of our compatriots do not even have water; water to drink, to bathe, to cook.

After a 3-year drought, the worst in the last 100 years, we will lose more than USD 20,000 of bio-economic exports and many producers, and all the activity around them, will be badly damaged.

Plan País Argentina advocates and works on a National Water Plan and on making all Argentines aware of its relevance.

Let's spread the word!

  1. I think it's great that we are looking for a better use and care of fresh water. But I think that this video puts it in a slightly distorted way: to say that Argentina "throws fresh water into the sea" does not seem correct to me. ....

The wonderful water cycle starts with evaporation and ends with the rivers reaching the sea...
I don't think it's right to say that rivers "dump" freshwater into the sea....
Furthermore, I estimate that of the 2 billion litres mentioned, 99% must be the flow of the Rio de la Plata.....

    1. Dear Alfredo: we did not say that the "rivers" throw, we said "Argentina", that is: we Argentines, who while other countries have to transform every drop of salt water into fresh water (at very high costs), allow ourselves to let almost all our fresh water drain, without being used for anything, into the sea. Meanwhile, our children in Chaco or Formosa carry jerry cans so that their mothers can cook, wash clothes or the family can bathe; and our producers lose their efforts year after year waiting for rains that do not come. In other words: we take responsibility for what we write: "We throw our fresh water into the sea". And we think it is very important for the citizens to know this so that we can start to demand that our leaders put the focus where they should put it and not on their inconsequential disputes. We are not just talking, as you say, about "better use and care of fresh water", we are talking about a global strategic and in-depth use: a NATIONAL STRATEGIC WATER PLAN with a focus on our federal growth and development. Israel, for example, being a desert territory, exports, per unit of territory, seven times more than Argentina. We tell you about it:https://www.planpaisargentina.org/provincias-argentinas-pueden-ser-israel/ All to be done.
