Dubai is one of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates, whose capital is the city of the same name. It is located on the coast of the Persian Gulf in the Arabian Desert.
Until the end of the 19th century, its economy was based on cattle breeding, fishing and the collection of dates and pearls. The latter were its most important income until the middle of the 20th century.
In 1960, only sixty years ago, a large volume of oil was discovered in the area. Thanks to its export, a large infrastructure was built: water and electricity supply networks, roads, bridges, a good telecommunications system and the airport.
But they did not rest on their laurels of prosperity. With foresight and long-term goals, they planned a growing prosperity, open to the world, so that it would not only depend on the oil that had allowed them to take off. In 1980, the airport was expanded, sports and recreational complexes were built, and tourism began to be seen as a source of additional income.
Thanks to this strategic planning, which allowed for the assessment and management of long-term development opportunities, with concrete targets and the monitoring of their achievement, Dubai's economy is now only 20% dependent on oil. Trade and services, including tourism, dominate its current economy. In addition, a smart tax exemption has resulted in many large companies not only establishing themselves in Dubai, but making it their base of operations.
The key remains the Plan, the Strategy by which to not only sustain a robust economy without relying on one activity alone, but to continue to closely monitor changes in the present to design the future. Diversify intelligently. To be inserted in the world and attentive to its demands in order to sustain growth over time.
Dubai is an example of how it is possible to prosper and develop economically in a few years with clear objectives.
Argentina has the world's second largest gas reserves, the fourth largest oil reserves, one of the most efficient photosynthetic basins in the world with one of the lowest carbon footprints on the planet and the possibility of feeding more than 10 times its population; a sea three times the size of its territory, full of resources only one of which is fishing, fresh water in abundance, sun in the north for photovoltaic energy, wind in the south for wind power, minerals of all kinds that will be voraciously required in the coming years, talent for research and technology, charming people to develop tourism to the last corner of our beautiful provinces.
On the other hand, we also have political parties of all stripes represented by unsuitable leaders and officials who have not bothered to train themselves, let alone work seriously and with dedication on a Growth and Development Plan, advised and monitored by professionals. Pure improvisation. We spend fortunes on generating more and more poor people.
Citizens must actively take charge of our country. It is our country. And that of our children and grandchildren. Focus, attention, commitment and work on a Plan and its State Policies that transcend any government in office. Communicate it to each other. Talk about it. Inform ourselves. Spread that information.
Set the agenda and demand that each candidate has his or her own government programme drawn up by suitable teams whose leaders will be their implementing ministers tomorrow.
Enough of the bullshit. Enough of the verses. No more empty slogans. No more voting for the least bad.
Party politics must no longer play its own game: that of getting re-elected, with its back turned to its responsibilities and to the citizens.
Citizens united behind a common purpose will succeed in bringing Argentina out of its decadence.
Let's go! All together for a New Argentina.
